5 Tips For Eating Out Without Blowing Your Diet

eatoutIt’s coming up on that time of year when there tend to be more reasons to eat out or grab stuff on the run. You know- with back to school, back to sports, holiday party planning -( I Know! I can’t believe it either….) – eating well often gets pushed to the wayside for the simple reason of thinking it is too hard to stay on track. I’m here to tell you that it can be done. There are just a few things to keep in mind.

 1.  Know how to read a menu.

cs-ibs-dining-out-restaurant-722x406When reading the menu options there are often descriptor words that can give some guidance in how your food is prepared. Steamed, grilled, baked, and broiled often lend itself to lighter dishes. These are going to be the better options for you. Whereas creamy, decadent, cheesy, rich and loaded are going to be the heavier dishes packing on the calories as well as most likely the not so good for you heart harming hydrogenated oils.

2.  Be prepared.

This is  a go to trick that I’ve taught my clients. If you have the opportunity, take the time to look at the menu before you get to the restaurant. Know exactly what you want to order (keeping in mind tip #1 from above!) so you won’t be swayed when you get there.  This is also a go to tip when dining with kids.  J

3.  Don’t drink your calories.

Dinner Party

I’m sure you’ve read this one before… But it is a big one. Order water with your meal. Make a goal of drinking one full glass before your food is served. If you do indulge in a cocktail or any other calorie laden drink- be sure you have a full glass of water before and after (or between if you have more than one). This will help to keep you full as well as hydrated. Also, keep in mind- that while the drinks themselves add in extra calories, the decision to consume more foods after a few beverages tends to pack on forgotten calories as well.

4.  Order off menu.

Another big tip I try and teach my clients! Restaurants today are often competing with other restaurants nearby. With that- they often times have to do what they can to keep you as a happy customer. This means that special orders are not that big of a deal. If you see a side dish that comes with a different entrée that you prefer- ask for it. If you prefer a dish cooked a different way- ask for it. The worst that can happen is they say no and you pick a different item. But—what if you could get exactly what you want exactly how you want it cooked. WIN for everyone!

5.  Remember your goals.

This is an easy one that often gets forgotten. Remember what your goals are. And even more importantly, remember why you set them. There is a reason you want to eat better, feel better, do better.  It is doable and it doesn’t have to be as difficult as we make it out to be. Keep in mind life is meant to be enjoyed though and even if you do indulge here or there- get back on track at the next opportunity to eat.  One bad meal doesn’t have to mean a bad lifetime of eating . Keep those goals in mind and make the choice that is right for you.
