The Weight Loss Journey Will Challenge You

Sometimes we are guilty of only talking about the good stuff. No one wants to admit that they failed or things aren’t going great. One thing I have learned is that successful can be often over-exaggerated. It is important that we discuss our failures though. We are all human. We will mess up. It is inevitable. What is more important is what you do next.

Failure is not the end. It is just a point that we will learn from. Successful people don’t fail ever. They just find out ways that don’t work as well and move on to something else. My last blog post I talked about my daughter Ellis who just learned to walk. For weeks she had been trying. Taking a step and falling over and over. She would cry, get frustrated, and then just start to crawl because it was easier. But everyday she would try again, and again she would learn a new way that you not walk. Until one day it click and she got it.

I wanted to share a quick story about the latest winner of our 8 week challenge, Amy. You have probably heard of this before. We put participants through a complete exercise and nutrition plan and push them to make health a priority for 8 weeks in hopes that it carries over long after the challenge is over. Over the past 8 years or so we have had really good success with this challenge. But it is not always rainbows and butterflies.

Amy has actually won our challenge 3 times now. I am trying to think of the best way to describe Amy without getting in trouble. Let’s just say that when she first started a few years ago everyone knew when she was at the studio. I would get, the more than occasional, dirty look and f bomb directed towards me. I am pretty sure being with me was the last thing Amy wanted to do. It was hard, uncomfortable, and awkward for her. But she did it. She complained about eating healthier nonstop, but she did that as well. I think we really got through to her and she got really good results.

Amy looked great, was healthier, eating better, and to all of our surprise making exercise a regular part of her routine. Amy continued to lose weight, get stronger, fit into clothes she hadn’t worn in years, and ended up winning a second challenge.

But then she was thrown a couple curve balls as life tends to do. Unfortunately she broke her ankle and was having a very difficult time recovery (and is still working on this). Obviously her exercise was effected by this. And shortly after her mother passed away. Dealing with issues like these would be hard on anyone. Life can really be tough and when it rains it pours sometimes.

During this time in her life we did not see Amy too much. She had a lot to deal with and needed to heal on multiple levels. During that time she slipped back into some old habits and gained much of the weight she worked so hard to lose.

For many people that would be the end of the story. But despite all of this Amy came back in for our last challenge. I’m sure she was scared but she faced me anyway even though she was embarrassed to weigh in with me again. She worked her butt off and got back on her diet plan. And I have to say there were quit a few less dirty looks and explicit language during the workouts. All the hard work is paying off and she again won our 8 week challenge.

And this isn’t the end for Amy. I am completely in her head now. She has admitted to hearing my voice when she is out trying to decide what to eat.
