The journey to better health and longevity will be challenging, difficult, and down right confusing sometimes. This is why it is important to take advantage of every trick, strategy, or cheat you can think of to give yourself the edge.
All around you people, including yourself, are going to try and stop you from reaching your goals. Not always on purpose, but it still happens. Not many people like change. When you start to make a change, your subconscious might fight back. Or many friends and family will fight against you, because they start to realize they need to change.
With everything seeming to work against you throughout your day, I wanted to give you a simple trick to push you in the right direction. This trick is so easy, yet incredibly powerful. It has to do with your morning routine.
What is your current morning routine? Do you hit snooze once your twice, crawl out of bed and into the shower. Then get dressed and grab some coffee? You probably follow the same routine most mornings. The question you need to ask yourself is will your morning routine set you up for the perfect day?
You would be shocked, how one small thing in the morning can lead to bigger and bigger things throughout the day. It is critical you start your day on the right track. You may have heard of Naval Admiral McRaven, who gave the commencement speech at the University of Texas a few years ago. One point the Admiral made was to make your bed in the morning. This simple task will help you feel a sense of pride for finishing a task, which will lead to another task, and another.
If you have followed my emails and posts before, you probably know I fail at this task. But there are other tasks that I do complete every morning. Whatever your task might be, find something simple you can do every morning that will start your day on the right task.
For example, one routine I have recently incorporated is to drink one glass of water, every morning. This sounds insignificant, but there are days where I struggle to get enough water in. So by starting my day with a big glass of cold water, I have accomplished something. When you are off to a good start, things tend to follow in the right direction.
Now it is difficult to start a new routine. So make sure you are consistent and do it at the same time in the same order of your morning events. So for my water task, I can do it as I wait for my cup of coffee to brew. It just becomes a habit. I hit brew, I pour a glass of water, and drink. Then I make my coffee and move on with my morning.
So maybe you don’t need help with water intake. Find something you can add to your morning routine that will help you throughout the day. Maybe you can do 2 push ups when you get out of bed. Or two squats. It doesn’t have to be anything major. These small tasks are just the first domino to lead to more and more positive habits.
Your challenge this week is to add in something to your morning routine that you can do everyday. Start small and go from there. You will be amazed how good it feels to start your day on the right track.
